On May 14, 1940 hundreds of homeless gathered in Rotterdam on the land of Hoboken, the empty meadow opposite the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Sitting in the grass, they saw the flames and smoke clouds looming behind the trees and the modern white villas that marked the edge of the city center. At that point nobody knew yet that thousands of people died, nobody knew the extent of the bombing, no one knew this terrible destruction would be the biggest impetus for the development of the city since the digging of the New Waterway at the end of the nineteenth century.
